Special Purpose Certificate of Qualification

This training and TSBC-endorsed certification program is designed specifically for Rental Industry Technicians to inspect, service and requalify portable gas-fired Heaters up to 400MBH. Completing this course enables qualified rental industry service technicians to apply for a Special Purpose Certificate of Qualification (SPCQ) from Technical Safety BC to perform regulated work for inspection, service, and requalification of specific makes and models of heaters used within the scope of their operation.

PRE-REQUISITE FOR PARTICIPATION: This course is specifically designed for CRA & ARA members who hold a valid Portable Heating Supply Operating Permit issued by TSBC and have complied with program requirements and conditions. It is limited to service technicians employed by rental industry companies and possess a minimum of 2 years of experience in service, maintenance, and repair of industrial and rental equipment.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Technician - Pre-Requisites | Enrolement | Limitations

The pre-requisite standards for enrollment ensure applicants have sufficient technical and mechanical skills to succeed. Applicants must also be directly employed by a TSBC-registered rental company and hold a current Operating Permit. Applicants must have a minimum of one year full-time experience in a service maintenance position or a minimum 2nd-year apprentice towards an industrial trade ticket.   

Special Purpose Certificate of Qualification

Technical Safety BC Directive D-GA-2018-01 enables an individual with Specialized Gas Equipment Training to apply for a Special Purpose Gas Certificate of Qualification (SPCQ) from Technical Safety BC.  The SPCQ certificate is limited in scope allowing the holder to perform regulated work as specified by the certificate and only under the conditions endorsed on the certificate.  The SPCQ remains valid for a maximum of 3 years and must be renewed.

SECTION 1 - Principles for Portable Gas-Fired Heaters

Provides the learner with general knowledge of the inspection and maintenance of portable gas-fired heaters, including propane properties and characteristics.  This section will cover the broader aspects of technical knowledge and competency required for all portable gas-fired heaters up to 400MBH .   

SECTION 2 - Skills Evaluations for Manufacturer Heater Endorsements

Instruction will include practical, hands-on evaluations of specific heaters.  Students will gain practical experience in the service, maintenance and inspection and be required to demonstrate skills learned in the classroom. Students must complete ‘Section 1 - Principles of Portable Gas Fired Heaters’ to be eligible to proceed. Section 2 covers specific makes and models of heaters and is separated into two categories. Category 1 covers direct-fired heaters. Category 2 covers indirect-fired heaters.
